Veteran and amateur blackjack players alike need to know some of the most common terms being used in casinos these days when it comes to playing the game.

If you know the terminology you will have an easier time learning the game and playing the game successfully in a casino, where your opponents and the dealer will show you no mercy.

The first couple of terms are elementary, but still important to the game. The dealer is the person who deals the cards to everyone sitting at the table. The dealer also takes all of the bets and determines when the wagering period closes during each match. An action is defined as the total amount of money bet during a set period of time. For example, if there are $10, $15 bets placed then there was a $150 action at the table.

Each blackjack match will have a burn card. A burn card is the card that is slid across the table by the dealer and placed into the discard pile. This burn card can be displayed either face up or face down, which is bad for players who are trying to count cards. After each shuffle that occurs, one card must be burned by the dealer.

Two of the most common terms blackjack players must know are hard hand and soft hand.

A hard hand is when any Ace is counted as a 1 or if there is no Ace present in the hand. A soft hand is when any Ace is counted as an 11 in the hand. Should you have a pat hand, it means that your hand tallies anywhere from 17 to 21. If your hand is worth more than 21, you have a bust, which means you have lost the game of blackjack.

When the player and the dealer tie each other is means that they are stuck in a push. Another important term is to surrender. Casinos across the country allow blackjack players to surrender their hand after they have been dealt their first two cards if they do not like the hand they have been dealt. When the player surrenders they will lose half of the money they wagered to start the match. If you like to toke the dealer, this means that you like to tip the dealer when the match is complete.
